Friday NCAAF Best Bets: Rest Spots and Line-of-Scrimmage Mismatches

By Wyatt Deane — Wyatt spent nine seasons breaking down all-22 for a small-college staff before he started betting the games he was already charting. He reads football through situation and personnel: who is on the field on third down, who wins the line of scrimmage, and how a short week changes both.

Is the market pricing what a short week actually does to a roster?

The San José State Spartans and Eastern Michigan Eagles both played in Week 0. That is where the similarity ends. Eastern Michigan is coming off a 28-17 win where the Eagles held their opponent to 17 points per game on the season, while San José State got run over, allowing 42 points per game. The Spartans also returned just 4 percent of last season's production, the lowest returning figure on this entire board. Eastern Michigan brought back 72 percent. You are buying a team that has played together, won together, and rested on a normal week, against a team that is essentially starting over after a loss. The market has Eastern Michigan at -170 on the moneyline. That number underweights the gap in continuity and the fact that San José State is a 0-1 team trying to install a new identity on the road. Take the Eagles.

The Toledo Rockets at Michigan State Spartans game is the second play. Michigan State returned just 21 percent of last season's production, one of the lowest marks on the board. Toledo returned 66 percent and brought in an elite new head coach with a history of winning. The Spartans' offensive rating sits at 27.7 against Toledo's 17.9, and the defensive gap is narrow, 25.1 to 26.6. Michigan State is the better team on paper, and the market prices them at -410. But you are laying a huge number against a MAC opponent that has continuity on its side and nothing to lose. Toledo getting double digits against a Michigan State team with a ton of questions all over the field is just too good to pass up.

The third play is out West with Stanford taking on UMiami. While UMiami should roll in this spot, Stanford is in a sneaky good spot behind one of the best offensive lines in College Football. Last week, they looked dominant until they let Hawaii mount an insane fourth-quarter comeback. Managing to squeak out a win, Stanford will look to clean things up and keep things close against UMiami. The edge here is in the trenches. Stanford has multiple NFL Draft talents across the offensive line. Meanwhile, Miami will look to replace stars Rueben Bain Jr. and Aikeem Mesidor. That gives me confidence that Stanford will at least be able to move the ball somewhat and keep things close in this one.

The Play

  • Eastern Michigan Eagles ML: -170
  • Toledo Rockets +10.5: -110
  • Stanford Cardinal +24.5: -110

Confidence: High on Eastern Michigan, moderate on Toledo, low on Stanford.

The first two are the ones I would build a card around. The third is a price you take because the alternative is laying -3500 on a team that has not played yet.
