Moss's 2 College Football Underdogs to Back on Saturday

By Frankie Moss — Covers the news that moves lines: injuries, scratches and lineup changes. Frankie looks for the spots where the market overreacts to a headline.

Fifty-one games on the board today and the two I keep coming back to are dogs getting points in spots where the number looks a half-step wrong. One has nearly all the money behind it, and the other is a short road dog with a clear matchup edge on the ground.

Cincinnati vs. Arizona, 11 p.m. ET

Pick: Cincinnati Bearcats +6.5 (-102 at DraftKings)

The money has made its call on this one. Cincinnati is pulling 79% of the bets and 92% of the money on the spread, and the line has moved from +7 to +6.5. When that much cash lands on a dog and the number moves toward it, it tells me the opener was the mistake, not the action.

The Bearcats have earned it. They're 4-0 with a +80 point differential, scoring 40.5 points per game, 23rd in the FBS, and converting 50% of their third downs. They sit 38th in SP+, the opponent-adjusted efficiency rating, right in the same neighborhood as Arizona at 33rd. The real concern is the Wildcats' third-down offense, which is converting 56% of the time, 6th in the country. If Arizona stays on the field all night, this gets tight. But Cincinnati's offense is good enough to trade punches, and getting nearly a touchdown with a team that hasn't lost is a bet I'll make every time.

Fresno State vs. Washington State, 9:30 p.m. ET

Pick: Fresno State Bulldogs +1.5 (-105 at DraftKings)

The efficiency gap in this game is wider than the line suggests. Washington State ranks 105th in SP+, and the Cougars are converting just 28.9% of their third downs, 130th out of 138 FBS teams. An offense that can't stay on the field has no business being favored, even at home.

The matchup tilts Fresno State's way on the ground. The Bulldogs average 4.8 yards per carry and 162.3 rushing yards per game, and the Cougars give up 4.9 yards per carry, 118th in the country. Fresno State is also +7 in turnover margin through 4 games, and its defense allows 19 points per game against a Washington State offense scoring 22.3. What gives me pause is the line itself. The Bulldogs opened -1 and now they're +1.5, so the early action went against the team I'm backing. I'll still take the points with the better defense and the better run game.

The Play

  • Cincinnati Bearcats +6.5: -102
  • Fresno State Bulldogs +1.5: -105
