Pittsburgh vs. Virginia Tech Odds, Prediction and Pick for Week 5
By Wyatt Deane — Spent nine seasons breaking down All-22 film for a college staff. Wyatt covers the NFL and college football through matchups and personnel.
Pittsburgh heads to Virginia Tech on Friday night at 7 p.m. ET, one of three games on the Week 5 college football card. The total sits at 54.5 after opening at 56.5. I think the matchup says it should be lower. This one comes down to whether the Hokies can run on a Panthers front that has not let anyone run all season.
The Pick
Pick: Pittsburgh/Virginia Tech Under 54.5 (-108 at DraftKings)
Pittsburgh's defense is the reason this bet cashes. The Panthers are allowing 8.5 points per game, 3rd in the FBS. Virginia Tech wants to run the ball, averaging 4.4 yards per carry and 177.8 rushing yards per game, but Pittsburgh is giving up just 2.1 yards per carry, 6th in the FBS in run defense. Take away a team's first option and the whole playbook shrinks.
The passing matchup does not bail the Hokies out either. Virginia Tech gains 7.6 yards per pass attempt, which is solid, but the Panthers are surrendering only 5.9 per attempt, 25th in the FBS. So you have an offense that leans on the run running into a wall, and a secondary that holds its own when teams go to the air. On the other side, the Hokies defense is allowing 16 points per game, 31st in the FBS, so Pittsburgh is not facing a pushover unit either. Both defenses are good enough to force long, grinding drives instead of quick strikes.
The market has already started to agree. This total opened at 56.5 and has come down to 54.5, and I still think there is room. Games involving these two teams have averaged 53.6 total points this season, which is right on the number, and the defenses in this game are better than that average suggests.
What could go wrong is simple. The Hokies are scoring 43.3 points per game through 4 games, 14th in the FBS, and the Panthers are at 39.3, 26th in the FBS. If both offenses click the way they have so far, this sails over. I will take the points to stay under.
