Sale's Strikeout Floor and Canning's Ceiling: Two Pitcher Props to Play Thursday

Strikeout props are the cleanest edge on Thursday's board, and the numbers point in opposite directions for the two starters in Atlanta.

Chris Sale has been elite all season, posting a 10.54 K/9 with a 2.06 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP across 105.0 innings. His strikeout line sits at a modest 6.5, and he's cleared that number in 56% of his outings this year. Sale's 29.6% whiff rate and 90th percentile chase rate suggest he's not just surviving; he's generating swings and misses at a high clip. Even against a Padres lineup that doesn't strike out at an extreme rate, buy low on Sale after weak strikeout totals against tough lineups to rack up whiffs.

On the other side, Griffin Canning has been a disaster. His 6.67 ERA and 1.62 WHIP tell the story, but the underlying numbers are worse. Canning allows a 48.8% hard-hit rate and a 9.9% barrel rate, both among the worst in the league. His strikeout prop is set at 4.5, and while he's hit that line fairly often this season, the Braves are one of the stingiest teams in the league to strike out. With a K/9 of just 8.95 and a 12.1% walk rate, Canning is struggling to miss bats and giving out tons of free passes. Facing a Braves lineup that ranks near the top in runs per game, he's unlikely to pitch deep enough to threaten the number.

Small edges, big season, these two props come from the same game but require completely different reads. Sale's floor is proven; Canning's ceiling is nonexistent. Get the number before it moves, because the market will catch up on both eventually.
