Salkilld Shocks Gamrot With First-Round Submission to Headline UFC Fight Night
By Frankie Moss — Frankie covers the news the market overreacts to: injuries, scratches, trade chatter. He makes a living on the other side of the panic. If the whole betting world leans one way after a headline, Frankie is already looking at the fade.
Quillan Salkilld needed just 4:25 to wrap up Mateusz Gamrot with a first-round submission, flipping the main event script at UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas.
The lightweight bout closed with Gamrot as a heavy favorite, but Salkilld found the finish before the opening frame was over. Gamrot had the edge on paper coming in, but the panic is the edge in live grappling, Salkilld seized the opening and never let go.
The undercard was a showcase for first-round violence. Yadier del Valle needed only 35 seconds to put away Darren Elkins via KO/TKO, a featherweight blitz that closed with del Valle at -1000. José Montanha followed suit at heavyweight, submitting Louie Sutherland in 1:50 with a first-round submission. I'll admit I had Montanha winning on the ground, but the speed of the tap was still jarring.
Diyar Nurgozhay closed at -425 and lived up to the number, stopping Bruno Lopes via KO/TKO at 4:59 of the first round in a light heavyweight scrap that ended just before the horn. Miles Johns also scored a first-round KO/TKO over Gianni Vazquez, closing at -298 and covering the chalk comfortably.
The decision-heavy portion of the card produced a few wide-margin favorites. Alexia Thainara closed at -20000 and took a unanimous nod over Amanda Lemos in women's strawweight, while Manoel Sousa (-6500) outworked Richie Miranda over three rounds. Diego Ferreira, who closed at an absurd -50000, cruised past Billy Quarantillo. Carol Foro (-1950) and Steven Asplund also went the distance to win their bouts.
The night belonged to Salkilld, but the quick finishes from del Valle and Montanha gave the crowd the most memorable moments. The window closes fast for underdogs who miss their chance, Gamrot found that out the hard way.
