Two Overs Highlight the Best Bets for Thursday's MLB Slate
By Frankie Moss — Frankie covers the news the market overreacts to: injuries, scratches, trade chatter. He makes a living on the other side of the panic. If the whole betting world leans one way after a headline, Frankie is already looking at the fade.
Why are the totals on today's board sitting a half-run below what the models see? Two games in particular have a projected total at least 0.6 runs higher than the posted number, and that kind of gap is worth chasing.
Start in Atlanta, where Griffin Canning brings a 6.67 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP into Truist Park against a Braves offense that scores 4.97 runs per game and owns a .734 OPS. Canning's Statcast numbers are ugly: a .343 xBA and a .442 xwOBA, while Chris Sale has been elite (2.06 ERA, 10.54 K/9), but the Padres have been absolutely on fire since the All-Star Break. The model projects 8.6 total runs, and the line is 8. I'll admit I'm a sucker for a starter mismatch that pushes the over, and this one fits.
In Cleveland, Taj Bradley and Gavin Williams both own hard-hit rates above 45% (45.3% and 48% respectively), and their xwOBA marks (.427 and .467) scream regression. The model projects 8.2 runs against a total of 7.5. The park at Progressive Field suppresses runs (adjRuns 0.924), but the underlying contact quality should overcome it, especially with Cleveland hitting this well at the dish since the break.
The Play
- Minnesota Twins/Cleveland Guardians OVER 7.5 Total Runs
- San Diego Padres/Atlanta Braves OVER 8 Total Runs
Confidence: High on STL ML, medium on the overs.
The window closes fast on totals when the model says the line is a half-run off. Get these numbers before the market adjusts.
