Two Strikeout Props Worth Fading and Following in Yankees-Pirates

By Cal Draper — Cal lives in the prop markets: hits, strikeouts, homers, the stuff the books price last and worst. He hunts small edges in matchup splits and park effects and swears the season is won a quarter-unit at a time.

The book's price these last and worst, but Wednesday's Yankees-Pirates matchup offers a clean split on two pitcher strikeout props.

Start with Gerrit Cole. The model projects him for just 6.1 strikeouts tonight, yet the line sits at 7.5. Cole's season numbers back the fade: a 9.00 K/9 over 55 innings, but his 17.3% whiff rate and .398 xwOBA suggest he's not missing bats the way he used to. His 3.93 ERA and 1.16 WHIP are solid, but the underlying Statcast data points to regression. The Pirates lineup is fearsome, and they have been making good contact. Cole's barrel rate of 9.4% means mistakes get punished.

On the other side, Mitch Keller's over 4.5 strikeouts is one of the safest numbers on the board. Keller projects for 5.8 Ks, giving a 1.3-edge against a line of 4.5. His season K/9 of 6.71 is modest, but this line is just way too low. The 5.14 ERA and 1.33 WHIP are ugly, but he still generates a 21.0% whiff rate. Against a Yankees lineup that's striking out a ton since the All-Star Break, Keller should coast past 4.5.

Yankee Stadium's park factors are neutral for runs (rFactor 0.993), but strikeouts are pitcher-driven. Cole's 9.4% barrel rate allowed is a red flag, while Keller's 7.4% barrel rate is actually better, yet Keller gets no respect from oddsmakers.

The Play

  • Gerrit Cole UNDER 7.5 Strikeouts
  • Mitch Keller OVER 4.5 Strikeouts

Confidence: High on Keller (95% season hit rate), moderate on Cole given the projection gap

Get the number before it moves on Keller's side, that 1.5 line won't last long if the market catches up.
