Vega's 3-Leg College Football Week 5 Parlay for Saturday

By Marisol Vega — Spent ten years grading tickets at a sportsbook. Marisol covers line movement, steam and closing-line value, and she writes the daily card.

Week 5 gives us a clean parlay structure: two big favorites laying around three touchdowns against bottom-10 defenses, then a total in a game where the market has already pushed the number up. A parlay needs every leg to win, so all three have to come through for the +602 ticket to cash.

Memphis vs. Charlotte, 11 a.m. ET

Pick: Memphis Tigers -20.5 (-110 at DraftKings)

Charlotte's defense is the reason this number is playable. The 49ers are allowing 36 points per game, 131st of 138 FBS teams, and they rank 137th nationally in SP+. Memphis should move the ball however it wants, with 10.5 yards per pass attempt against a secondary giving up 7.8 per attempt, plus 6.5 yards per carry and 241 rushing yards per game.

The other side of the ball matters just as much for a three-score cover. Charlotte is scoring 19.5 points per game, 124th in the FBS, and converting just 30.8% of third downs, so the 49ers are unlikely to trade punches. What gives me pause is that the line has come down from -21.5 to -20.5, and Memphis is allowing 26 points per game itself. Still, I'd rather lay points against an offense this limited.

Toledo vs. Ball State, 2 p.m. ET

Pick: Toledo Rockets -21 (-108 at DraftKings)

Ball State can't throw, and Toledo doesn't let anyone throw. The Cardinals gain 5.4 yards per pass attempt, and the Rockets are giving up just 5.7 per attempt, 19th in the FBS. An offense scoring 18 points per game, 130th in the country, has no path to keeping pace when its one-dimensional attack runs into that wall.

Toledo's offense should finish the job. The Rockets are scoring 43.3 points per game, 16th in the FBS, against a Ball State defense allowing 37.5 per game, 135th of 138. The market agrees, pushing this from -19.5 up to -21, so I'm laying the bigger number. The concern is that Toledo's own defense allows 26 points per game, which leaves a backdoor open if the Rockets relax late.

Purdue vs. Illinois, 4:15 p.m. ET

Pick: Purdue/Illinois Over 62.5 (-110 at DraftKings)

The money has already spoken here, driving this total from 60.5 up to 62.5, and I think it's still worth following. Purdue's defense is allowing 39.5 points per game, 136th of 138 FBS teams, and Illinois is built to exploit every weakness. The Illini average 5.5 yards per carry against a Purdue run defense allowing 5.5 per attempt, 133rd in the FBS, and they gain 8.5 yards per pass attempt against a secondary surrendering 9.2, 136th nationally.

Games involving these two teams have averaged 66 total points this season, comfortably above this number. The one thing working against the over is Purdue's ground game, just 2.9 yards per carry and 101.5 per game, which could stall drives. Illinois' defense allowing 26.5 per game should still give the Boilermakers enough through the air to push this past the number.
