Arizona vs. Texas Tech Prediction and Pick: Deane's Best Bet for Saturday

By Wyatt Deane — Spent nine seasons breaking down All-22 film for a college staff. Wyatt covers the NFL and college football through matchups and personnel.

No. 22 Arizona heads to Texas Tech for a noon ET kick on Saturday, and this one has the look of a game where both offenses get theirs. The Wildcats and Red Raiders both rank in the top 28 nationally in scoring, and neither has been slowed down much through seven games. The matchup that decides this bet is simple: can either defense get enough stops to keep this under the number. I don't think so.

The Pick

Pick: Arizona/Texas Tech Over 54.5 (-110 at DraftKings)

Arizona is scoring 36.1 points per game through seven games, 21st in the FBS. Texas Tech is right there with them at 35.9 per game, 28th in the country. When you get two offenses producing like that, you don't need much from the other side to clear a number in the mid 50s.

What I really like is how Arizona sustains drives. The Wildcats are converting 54.7% of their third downs, third best in the FBS. That means longer possessions, more snaps, and more chances to put points on the board. It also means Texas Tech's defense will be on the field a lot, and tired defenses give up points late.

Games involving these two teams have averaged 54.6 total points this season, right at this number. That tells me the market has this priced correctly, and I'd rather be on the side of two offenses that both rank in the top 28 than bet against them.

What worries me is the defenses. Arizona is allowing just 16.7 points per game, 22nd in the FBS, and Texas Tech is giving up 20.4, which ranks 36th. If both defenses play to their season averages, this could stay under. But I think the offenses are the stronger units here, and I'll take my chances with points.

The Play

  • Arizona Wildcats/Texas Tech Red Raiders OVER 54.5 Total Points: -110
