College Football Top 25 Picks: 4 Best Bets for Week 6
By Wyatt Deane — Spent nine seasons breaking down All-22 film for a college staff. Wyatt covers the NFL and college football through matchups and personnel.
Nineteen ranked teams are in action on a 46-game Saturday that starts at 12 p.m. ET, and I'm betting four of them. I like three favorites to cover and one total out West.
Kansas vs. Utah, 8 p.m. ET
Pick: Utah Utes -15.5 (-110 at DraftKings)
That Utah defense is the whole argument. The Utes are allowing 10.3 points per game, third in the FBS, and Kansas has been sloppy with the ball at minus-4 in turnover margin. A team that can't protect it is going to have a long night at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
The other side of the ball travels too. Utah is scoring 43.3 points per game, 12th in the country, and converting 54.2% of third downs, which is seventh. That's how you cover big numbers, by staying on the field and keeping the other offense watching from the bench. The Utes are also ninth in SP+, so this isn't a paper ranking.
What could go wrong is Kansas quietly has a decent defense of its own, allowing 17 points per game. If the Jayhawks keep Utah in the low 30s, this spread is a lot to ask. I still think the turnover problem decides it.
North Carolina vs. Pittsburgh, 12 p.m. ET
Pick: Pittsburgh Panthers -3.5 (-112 at DraftKings)
The efficiency ratings say Pittsburgh is the real team here. The Panthers sit 20th in SP+ and they're 5-0 with a defense allowing 13.4 points per game, 13th in the FBS. At home, laying less than a field goal and a hook, that's a number I'll take.
The matchup underneath it is even better. North Carolina wants to run, 4.6 yards per carry and 135.5 rushing yards a game, and Pitt allows 2.1 yards per carry, sixth in the FBS. Take away the run and the Tar Heels don't have a plan B against a defense this good. The money agrees, with 67% of it on the Panthers.
The one thing that keeps this from being bigger is that the Tar Heels allow only 19.5 points a game on defense. If the Panthers stall out offensively this could stay a one-score game deep into the fourth.
Texas vs. Oklahoma, 3:30 p.m. ET
Pick: Texas Longhorns -7.5 (-105 at DraftKings)
Oklahoma can't run the ball, and Texas doesn't let anybody run it. The Sooners average 2.9 yards per carry and 99 rushing yards a game, and the Longhorns give up 2.8 per carry, 17th in the country. When a one-dimensional offense meets a defense built to make you one-dimensional, you lay the points.
The rest of it lines up the same way. Texas is seventh in SP+, the defense allows 13.3 points a game, and Oklahoma is scoring 22 points per game, which ranks 110th in the FBS. Add a minus-6 turnover margin for the Sooners and you're asking them to beat the No. 1 team in the country without a run game and while giving the ball away.
The honest concern is that Oklahoma is still 27th in SP+, so this is a real defense on the other side and not a pushover. Texas also doesn't run it great itself at 3.6 yards per carry. I think the Longhorns win this with defense and field position, and a touchdown margin feels low.
UCLA vs. Oregon, 3:30 p.m. ET
Pick: UCLA/Oregon Over 57.5 (-115 at DraftKings)
These two teams score, full stop. Oregon is putting up 47.5 points per game, fourth in the FBS, and UCLA is right behind at 44.8, sixth in the country. Games involving these teams have averaged 67.2 total points this season, and we're being asked to clear 57.5.
UCLA's run game is the piece that keeps this over alive even if Oregon pulls away. The Bruins average 7 yards per carry and 281.5 rushing yards a game, and the Ducks are just middle of the pack against the run at 3.6 per carry. Long touchdown drives count the same as short ones. The money is on the over too, 74% of it against only 40% of the bets.
What gives me pause is the total has dropped from 60.5 to 57.5, so somebody was betting the under early. UCLA's run defense is also legit at 2.7 yards per carry allowed, which could slow Oregon down. Even so, two top-10 scoring offenses don't need much help to get past this number.
The Play
- Utah Utes -15.5: -110
- Pittsburgh Panthers -3.5: -112
- Texas Longhorns -7.5: -105
- UCLA Bruins/Oregon Ducks OVER 57.5 Total Points: -115
