Iowa vs. Washington Prediction, Odds and Pick for Friday, Oct. 9

By Wyatt Deane — Spent nine seasons breaking down All-22 film for a college staff. Wyatt covers the NFL and college football through matchups and personnel.

Week 6 wraps up with No. 20 Iowa taking on Washington at 9 p.m. ET. This one comes down to a simple question: can the Huskies move the ball on one of the best defenses in the country. Iowa comes in at 4-1 with a plus-82 point differential, and they've already won on the road this season. Washington has talent, but their offense has sputtered in the spots that matter most.

The Pick

Pick: Iowa Hawkeyes +2.5 (-105 at DraftKings)

Iowa's defense is the reason I'm taking the points. The Hawkeyes are allowing 12.6 points per game, 10th in the FBS, and that travels. Road game, late kickoff, hostile environment, none of it changes what this unit does week to week. They rank 19th nationally in SP+, the opponent-adjusted efficiency rating, so this isn't a team fattening up on a soft schedule.

The matchup tilts further Iowa's way when you look at how Washington has to move the ball. The Huskies average 3.7 yards per carry and 109 rushing yards per game, and now they run into a front allowing 2.9 yards per carry, 22nd in the FBS in run defense. When a one-dimensional offense meets a defense that erases the run, drives stall. That's been Washington's season in a nutshell. They're converting 29% of their third downs, 130th of 138 FBS teams, and they're scoring 26.6 points per game through five. You can't sustain offense like that against a defense this good.

Iowa's resume backs up the number. The Hawkeyes are 4-1, 1-0 on the road, and ranked No. 20 in the AP poll. Getting 2.5 points with a team that could win this game outright is value I'll take every time.

What worries me is Washington isn't some pushover. The Huskies rank 29th nationally in SP+, so they're a quality team at home. And Iowa's passing game gains 6.6 yards per attempt, which matches exactly what Washington's defense gives up, so the Hawkeyes may not stretch the field. This sets up as a low-scoring, grind-it-out game, which is exactly where Iowa's defense and the points work in my favor.

The Play
