Commanders vs. 49ers Prediction, Odds and Pick for Monday, Oct. 19

By Wyatt Deane — Spent nine seasons breaking down All-22 film for a college staff. Wyatt covers the NFL and college football through matchups and personnel.

Week 6 wraps up Monday night when the Washington Commanders visit the San Francisco 49ers at 8:15 p.m. ET. This one comes down to whether the Commanders defense can slow down a 49ers offense that has been putting up points all season. Washington has struggled to stop anybody, and that is a problem against a team that finishes drives as well as San Francisco does.

The Pick

Pick: San Francisco 49ers -7.5 (-105 at BetMGM)

The 49ers defense is allowing 18.6 points per game, 3rd in the NFL, and that is where this cover starts. Washington is going to have a hard time keeping pace if they are only getting into the teens or low 20s. San Francisco has been getting off the field and making life hard on opposing offenses. That is how spreads like this get covered.

The other side of the ball is just as lopsided. The 49ers are scoring 30.8 points per game through 5 games, 3rd in the NFL, and now they get a Commanders defense that is allowing 29.8 points per game, 30th in the NFL. When one of the best scoring offenses in football meets one of the worst scoring defenses, the points pile up fast.

The matchup in the passing game favors San Francisco too. The 49ers gain 8.1 yards per pass attempt, and the Commanders are giving up 6.5 per attempt, 20th in the NFL. San Francisco is converting 49.1% of their third downs, 2nd in the NFL, so Washington is going to have a tough time getting off the field even when they do force third down. Once the 49ers get inside the 20, they score touchdowns 88.2% of the time. Drives are going to end in sevens, not threes.

What worries me is the turnover margin. The Commanders are +5 in turnover margin through 5 games, so they have been winning the ball even when they lose the yardage battle. If Washington steals a couple of possessions and keeps this close into the fourth quarter, the backdoor is open. But San Francisco's defense and red zone offense should build a lead that holds up.

The Play

  • San Francisco 49ers -7.5: -105
