Eagles vs. Commanders Odds, Prediction and Pick for Week 8

By Wyatt Deane — Spent nine seasons breaking down All-22 film for a college staff. Wyatt covers the NFL and college football through matchups and personnel.

Week 8 wraps up Sunday night with the Philadelphia Eagles at the Washington Commanders at 8:20 p.m. ET. Washington is 1-4-1 with a -40 point differential, but the Eagles are catching 6.5 points in a game where the matchup leans their way. The whole thing comes down to whether the Washington defense, one of the worst in the league, can get off the field.

The Pick

Pick: Philadelphia Eagles +6.5 (-110 at BetMGM)

Start with the Washington defense, because that's where this game gets decided. The Commanders are allowing 28.7 points per game, 31st in the NFL. A defense giving up that many points has no business laying nearly a touchdown against a division opponent, and it gives Philadelphia plenty of room to stay inside this number even if the offense grinds.

Washington's problems on that side of the ball get worse on money downs. The Commanders are converting 29.4% of their third downs, 32nd in the NFL, which means their defense is on the field a lot and their offense isn't sustaining anything. They're scoring 22 points per game through 6 games, 21st in the NFL, so this isn't a team built to run away from anybody. When the Eagles do get inside the 20, they finish. Philadelphia scores touchdowns 73.7% of the time in the red zone, and against a defense that bleeding points, those trips add up.

The betting public sees it the same way. The splits show 75% of bets and 60% of the money on the Eagles, and I get it. You're getting 6.5 points with the team that has the better red zone offense against a defense ranked near the bottom of the league.

What worries me is Philadelphia's own offense. The Eagles are scoring 18.1 points per game through 7 games, 29th in the NFL, and the run game has been stuck, averaging 3.4 yards per carry and 73.7 rushing yards per game against a Washington front allowing just 3.6 yards per carry, 10th in the NFL in run defense. If the Eagles can't move it at all, this could get ugly. But 6.5 points is a lot in a game where neither team has shown it can blow anybody out, and I'll take the points.

The Play

  • Philadelphia Eagles +6.5: -110
