NBA Best Bets Tonight: 4 Picks for Friday, Oct. 30

By Marisol Vega — Spent ten years grading tickets at a sportsbook. Marisol covers line movement, steam and closing-line value, and she writes the daily card.

Ten games on the NBA board tonight, the first tipping at 7 p.m. ET, and the card is loaded with injury news that is already moving numbers. My four plays lean hard into those absences: three favorites laying points against shorthanded opponents, plus one total where the money has been pounding the under all day.

Magic vs. Raptors, 7:30 p.m. ET

Pick: Toronto Raptors -5.5 (-113 at BetRivers)

Toronto catches Orlando on a night when the Magic are missing Paolo Banchero, who has averaged 33.8 minutes a game. That is a huge chunk of their offense gone, and this was already an offense scoring 107 points per game, 28th in the league, while getting outscored by 12.5 points per game.

The Raptors come in allowing 102.5 points per game, the fewest in the NBA, and the market has noticed. Toronto is pulling 75% of the bets and 72% of the money on the spread. Orlando is 1-3 and now has to solve the league's best defense without its leading man.

The risk is real on the other side too: Kawhi Leonard is out for Toronto after averaging 28.8 minutes a game. Even so, Orlando's scoring problems run deeper than one absence, and I'd lay the points.

Lakers vs. Warriors, 10 p.m. ET

Pick: Los Angeles Lakers -2.5 (-106 at FanDuel)

Golden State will be without Jimmy Butler tonight, and his 31.2 minutes a game are not easily replaced against a Lakers team scoring 123.2 points per game, 1st in the NBA. Los Angeles is also outscoring opponents by 9.6 a night, 5th best.

Bettors have been on this since it opened. The line has moved from Lakers -1.5 to -2.5, with 71% of the bets on Los Angeles, and at 4-1 they have earned the respect. A short number against a Warriors team missing Butler is exactly where I want to be.

What gives me pause is the schedule: this is the Lakers' third game in four nights, and Golden State can still score, putting up 117.6 per game. If the legs go flat, this gets sweaty, but the matchup favors the visitors.

Pacers vs. Heat, 8 p.m. ET

Pick: Miami Heat -8.5 (-102 at BetMGM)

Follow the money on this one. Miami opened -3.5 and the number has steamed all the way to -8.5, a five-point move that tells you where the sharp side sits.

Indiana will be without Tyrese Haliburton, who has averaged 31 minutes a game, and the 2-3 Pacers were already giving up 114.8 points per game, the 13th-most in the league. The splits back the move too: only 44% of the bets are on Miami, but 82% of the money is, which means the bigger tickets are on the Heat.

The honest concern is Miami's own body of work. The Heat have been outscored by 7.8 points per game this season, so laying more than eight is not comfortable. Still, the market has spoken loudly, and Indiana is missing its floor leader for this one.

Knicks vs. 76ers, 7:30 p.m. ET

Pick: Knicks/76ers Under 228.5 (-110 at FanDuel)

Neither of these teams lights up the scoreboard. Games involving the Knicks and 76ers have averaged 218.8 total points this season, nearly ten points under tonight's number of 228.5.

The personnel numbers explain it. New York is scoring 109.8 points per game, 25th in the league, and Philadelphia is at 110.8, 22nd, while the 76ers' defense has allowed just 107.4 per game, the 5th-fewest. The total opened at 230.5 and has already dropped two points, with 72% of bets and a whopping 92% of the money on the under.

When that much of the money lands on one side of a total and the line has already come down, I am happy to follow it. Two bottom-ten offenses and a top-five defense is a combination built for a grind.

The Play

  • Toronto Raptors -5.5: -113
  • Los Angeles Lakers -2.5: -106
  • Miami Heat -8.5: -102
  • New York Knicks/Philadelphia 76ers UNDER 228.5 Total Points: -110
