NBA Picks Tonight: 4 Best Bets for Wednesday Led by the Raptors
By Marisol Vega — Spent ten years grading tickets at a sportsbook. Marisol covers line movement, steam and closing-line value, and she writes the daily card.
Twelve games on the Wednesday card, starting at 7 p.m. ET, and a handful of lopsided matchups are already pulling heavy money to one side. I'm laying points with three favorites and playing one under in a late game out West.
Magic vs. Raptors, 7:30 p.m. ET
Pick: Toronto Raptors -4.5 (-110 at Caesars)
Paolo Banchero is out for the Magic, and that's 33.8 minutes a night coming out of the lineup. Orlando is putting up 109.7 points per game, 25th in the league, and now they walk into Toronto down a starter who plays heavy minutes.
The Raptors have been one of the best defensive teams in the early going, allowing 103.7 points per game, second-fewest in the NBA, and they're outscoring opponents by 10 a night, fourth-best in the league. The market agrees. 86% of the money on this spread is on Toronto, and it's not hard to see why.
Kawhi Leonard and Malachi Smith are both out for the Raptors, so they're not at full strength either. Even so, I'd rather be on the home team with the second-best defensive numbers in the league against an offense ranked 25th in scoring.
Heat vs. Hawks, 7 p.m. ET
Pick: Atlanta Hawks -3.5 (-108 at DraftKings)
The Heat have been outscored by 12.8 points per game this season, 27th in the NBA, and they're 0-4. Miami is scoring 109 points a night while giving up 121.8, the seventh-most in the league. Nothing about that profile travels well.
Atlanta is the opposite story on offense, scoring 121 points per game, fifth in the NBA. The Hawks are 2-2, but that scoring average is the best number on the board in this matchup, and now they face a Heat team allowing 121.8 points a night.
What gives me pause is where the money sits. Only 15% of the handle is on the Hawks despite 46% of bets, which means bigger wagers are on Miami. I'm still laying the short number. The Heat rank 27th in both scoring and point differential, and Atlanta's offense ranks fifth.
Spurs vs. Jazz, 9 p.m. ET
Pick: Spurs/Jazz Under 233.5 (-110 at BetMGM)
Games involving these two teams have averaged 230.1 total points this season, and the number on the board is 233.5. That gap matters. The total opened at 234.5 and has already been bet down a point, so I'm not the only one who sees it.
San Antonio is on the second night of a back-to-back and playing without Tobias Harris, who has averaged 29 minutes a game. Tired legs and a missing rotation piece usually show up on the offensive end. The Spurs also defend, allowing 109.8 points per game, ninth-fewest in the league, and the Jazz only score 112.8, which ranks 20th.
The risk is Utah's defense, which has allowed 121 points a night. If the Spurs get hot this could still clear the number. I'd rather bet on the back-to-back flattening San Antonio's legs than on the Jazz suddenly figuring out how to guard.
Rockets vs. Bucks, 8 p.m. ET
Pick: Houston Rockets -8.5 (-102 at FanDuel)
The money has made its mind up on this one. 73% of bets and 82% of the handle are on the Rockets, and when the split leans that hard toward the cash, it usually means the sharper side is the popular side. Houston has earned it, outscoring opponents by 9.8 points per game, fifth in the NBA, and sitting at 4-0.
The matchup helps too. The Rockets score 120.8 points a night, sixth-best in the league, and the Bucks allow 122.3, sixth-most. Milwaukee is 1-3 and giving up more points per game than all but five teams.
Alperen Sengun is out for Houston, and 34.2 minutes a night is a real absence. The Bucks also score 116.8 a game, so they can keep pace if this turns into a track meet. Laying 8.5 on the road isn't free, but the Rockets have been winning by nearly 10 a night and Milwaukee's defense ranks near the bottom of the league.
The Play
- Toronto Raptors -4.5: -110
- Atlanta Hawks -3.5: -108
- San Antonio Spurs/Utah Jazz UNDER 233.5 Total Points: -110
- Houston Rockets -8.5: -102
