NFL Week 8 Best Bets: 2 Picks for Sunday
By Marisol Vega — Spent ten years grading tickets at a sportsbook. Marisol covers line movement, steam and closing-line value, and she writes the daily card.
Twelve games on the Sunday card, the first kicking off at 1 p.m. ET, and the board has plenty of spots worth a look. I'm landing on two sides of it: an under in Cincinnati where the money is already way ahead of me, and a home favorite in Buffalo that I think wins by more than a field goal.
Titans vs. Bengals, 1 p.m. ET
Pick: Titans/Bengals Under 46.5 (-110 at DraftKings)
The money on this total is about as one-sided as you'll see, with 87% of bets and 93% of the money on the under. When that much cash lands on one side of a number, I want to know why, and the Titans offense answers it. Tennessee is scoring 15.4 points per game through 7 games, 31st in the NFL, and they're converting just 35.3% of their third downs, 28th in the league. Drives stall before they start.
Even when the Titans do get close, they don't finish. They're scoring touchdowns on 47.4% of their red zone trips, and games involving these two teams have averaged 42.6 total points this season against a posted total of 46.5. The Bengals defense helps too, allowing 20.3 points per game, 8th in the NFL.
The worry is Cincinnati's side of the scoreboard. The Bengals are scoring 27.2 points per game, 4th in the NFL, and the Titans are giving up 7 yards per pass attempt, 29th in the league. If the Bengals hang 30 on their own, this gets sweaty. But Tennessee would still need to contribute, and nothing about their season says they will.
Ravens vs. Bills, 1 p.m. ET
Pick: Buffalo Bills -3 (-115 at Caesars)
Buffalo is scoring 32.8 points per game through 6 games, the best mark in the NFL, and that offense is why I'm laying the field goal at home. The Bills convert 48.4% of their third downs, 2nd in the league, so they stay on the field, and when they reach the red zone they score touchdowns 72% of the time. Sustained drives ending in sevens is exactly how you cover a short number.
The bigger money agrees. The spread splits show 40% of bets but 69% of the money on Buffalo, which tells you the larger tickets are on the Bills. It fits the resume: 5-1, 2-1 at home, plus-26 point differential, and a passing game gaining 7.7 yards per attempt against a Ravens defense sitting middle of the pack at 6.3 allowed.
What keeps me honest is the other side of the ball. Buffalo is allowing 28.5 points per game, 30th in the NFL, and Baltimore gains 7.4 yards per pass attempt. The Ravens can score enough to make the fourth quarter uncomfortable. I'd still rather back the league's best offense at home needing to win by more than a kick.
