Ohio vs. Akron Prediction and Pick: Deane's Best Bet for Tuesday
By Wyatt Deane — Spent nine seasons breaking down All-22 film for a college staff. Wyatt covers the NFL and college football through matchups and personnel.
Ohio heads to Akron on Tuesday night for a Week 10 MAC game kicking off at 7 p.m. ET, one of two college football games on the slate. The Bobcats come in laying two touchdowns on the road, and the number asks them to win by more than 14. The matchup that decides it is simple: Ohio's run game against an Akron run defense that has been getting pushed around all season.
The Pick
Pick: Ohio Bobcats -14 (-110 at DraftKings)
The case for Ohio starts on the other side of the ball, because Akron's defense can't stop anybody. The Zips are allowing 32.8 points per game, 129th of 138 FBS teams. When a defense gives up that many points every week, a two-touchdown spread stops looking big and starts looking like the natural result.
The specific matchup I keep coming back to is in the trenches. The Bobcats average 4.9 yards per carry and 192.4 rushing yards per game, and the Zips allow 5.8 yards per carry, 136th of 138 FBS teams in run defense. That is a team that wants to run it against a team that can't stop the run. Ohio can lean on that all night, control the clock, and keep the chains moving. The Bobcats are converting 49% of their third downs, 19th in the FBS, which means long drives instead of punts, and long drives against this defense turn into points.
Akron doesn't have the offense to answer. The Zips are scoring 19 points per game through 8 games, 128th of 138 FBS teams, and they're -8 in turnover margin through 8 games. A team that can't score and gives the ball away has no path to keeping this inside two touchdowns. Akron ranks 135th nationally in SP+, the opponent-adjusted efficiency rating, and that's the whole picture: bad offense, bad defense, bad ball security.
What worries me is Ohio isn't exactly a powerhouse either. The Bobcats rank 78th nationally in SP+, so they're capable of a flat quarter or two on the road. But flat quarters don't lose this cover, because Akron doesn't score enough to capitalize. Ohio runs it, Akron can't stop it, and the Zips can't keep pace. I'd lay the points.
